It is a salute to the stars of the Asian television industry.
And Singapore could well be shining bright at the upcoming 7th annual Asian Television (ATV) Awards.
Of the 121 nominations, Singapore – the host country – is leading the charge with 50 nominations, or 41% of total nominations.
MediaCorp’ TV’s 20 nominations and SPH MediaWorks’ 16, make up the bulk of it. Those who have followed the awards would know that Singapore has dominated the list over the past 6 years.
But how does this award compare to the Emmys or the Oscars?
Mr Jonathan Hallett, the publishing director of broadcast trade magazine Television Asia and chairman of a panel of 50 judges from 11 countries, said:” There are many international awards like the Emmys and New York Festivals…but the production budget that people have in Asia is not as high as in America or Europe.”
“It’s hardly surprising that the number of entries from Singapore is the highest,” said Mr Hallet. He said that there is higher recognition of the awards here since the organisers are based locally.
But 1 can take heart that more foreign entries have been received over the years. This year, 1300 entries from 14 countries – including Hong Kong, Malaysia, Philippines, Indonesia, Sri Lanka, India, South Korea, Thailand and Vietnam – are vying for the show’s 29 awards.
There are also a record number of entries from Japan and China. Nippon Television Network Corporation from Japan and China Central Television are 2 of the newcomers.
Mr Hallet said:” Some comedies play on certain words, puns or situations and are not necessarily funny with subtitles. One of the reasons why Singapore is so successful (in the ATV Awards) is that it has many English comedies.
He’s right: Comedies by MediaCorp TV (such as Phua Chu Kang, Mr Kiasu) and SPH MediaWorks (Ah Girl II) have hogged categories like Best Comedy Programme and Best Comedy Performance.
Ms Alice Tan, vice-president of network programming and promotions 5, MediaCorp TV and CEO of TVMobile, noted:” Every broadcaster from every country has an equal chance of shining if it has outstanding productions and performers.”
Don’t miss hosts Glenda Chong (CAN), Utt (MTV) and Dasmond Koh (MediaCorp Studios), and performing artistes that include Regine Velasquez (Philippines), Camelia (Malaysia) and Power Station (Taiwan) in the Asian Televeision Awards 2002 on MediaCorp Channel 5 on Dec 7 (Sat), 6pm. The 2nd telecast will be on Dec 14 (Sat), 5pm.
